Cedar Valley Medical Specialists/Digestive Health Center comments on recent findings from PLOS 6/9/2015 data mining study for incoming questions regarding proton pump inhibitors (PPI) medication.
There are some valid findings to this recent study; however, it does not show clearly that PPI’s cause heart attacks. This was a study done to generate hypothesis for further research, so findings do not mean cause and effect. We are following this closely and watching for any new information that may develop from this study. It is obvious that more research needs to be done in this area. We subscribe to AGA’s (American Gastroenterology Association) “Choosing Wisely” which means that we prescribe patients appropriate dose of PPI medication for the appropriate duration. We recommend regular follow-up appointments for our patients to assess and determine this. Please keep in mind that there are clear benefits of taking these medications. They are useful for GERD and prevention of GI bleeding. As with any medication, there may always be risk, but one must weigh the benefits also. We do not recommend our patients abruptly stop their meds without checking with us first.
